Ethical Conservation Alliance Manifesto
We, the undersigned, share a vision of a world where ethical, inclusive, and just nature conservation efforts are supported and led by local and indigenous communities. We recognize that community-led conservation can be one of the most effective approaches to protecting wildlife and meeting humanity’s global biodiversity and development targets.
We are keenly aware of the history of top-down and coercive conservation efforts that have led to extreme injustices and marginalization of local and indigenous communities throughout the world, and are concerned that despite ongoing efforts, the loss of biodiversity and impacts of climate change continue to intensify at alarming rates.
As an organization signing up to be a part of the Ethical Conservation Alliance, we are committed to contributing to enhancing the capacity of conservationists around the world in strengthening conservation leadership among local and indigenous communities. We believe in enabling conservation practitioners to build respectful, ethical, and resilient conservation partnerships with local and indigenous communities through joint development of toolkits and resources.
By signing below, we pledge to support this mission and work towards a more sustainable future for all where ethical, inclusive, and just conservation efforts are supported and led by local and indigenous communities.
We will actively participate and contribute to the development of statements and other resources. As members of this international alliance, we hereby commit to collaboratively working towards this vision through innovation, respect for diversity, transparency, accountability, equity, justice, inclusivity, empathy, humility, and integrity.
